Every other city we go, every other vi-de-o

(It’s all about bags)

No matter where I go, I see the same bag

(Yeah nigga, ha ha ha ha!)

my leftover experiment

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

It’s somewhat unethical and against what i stand for, but i did it in the name of science: i left a bag over. In an attempt to see how far the word of the leftoverones has been spread i tied a leftoverbag to a tree in a highly trafficked area. I actually found the leftoverbag in the tree but i wrapped it around there good so it wouldn’t blow off, i wanted to wait and see how long it would take for someone to pick it up.

It’s tied to a bush outside of where i work, so i can watch it if i can get a cubicle next to a window and i try to count how many people walk past it, possibly even looking at it, but don’t do anything. Every time someone passes i bow my head in shame.

This leftoverbag has been in this, easily accessible, tree since early November. It is now mid-April. It was a rough winter and the leftoverbag has become tattered and weathered, there is little hope for reusing it for anything.

This makes me sad. About 600 people work at my job and most all of them pass this leftoverbag on a daily basis. It is also next to a bus stop where tons of people spend a lot of time waiting. Across the street to a news station, it has yet to gain media coverage. And by a grocery store, where it most likely originated.

How long will it take before someone takes action? How long will it take before people notice the leftovers? I can understand that people are busy and just trying to get to work on time, and in fairness there was a lot of snow this winter, but still, this is a long time for a bag to be leftover.

I think this leftoverbags serves several purposes A.) it shows that, although we think that many of us are environmentally conscious that we often neglect the environment right in front of our eyes B) People don’t have enough time to notice and if they do to act on, or care about what needs to be done. C) bags can be leftover for a very long time.

I will leave this leftoverbag in this tree until it is saved or i leave my job.
